Everyone has an inner child. However, contrary to what a lot of people believe, our inner child is not the childlike personality that we have clung on to throughout our adult lives. Instead, our inner child is the part of our subconscious mind that is still free-spirited and forgiving, wanting to experience and live life like a child.
However, just like our inner child holds the positive aspect of childlikeness, it also carries the wounds from our past. These wounds may be the result of emotional or physical abuse, growing up under a toxic environment, or enduring bullying during school years, for instance. The pains resulting from these wounds can stay with us throughout our lives and show up at the most unexpected moments – unless we do the work required to heal our inner child.
